Program Outline
Our two-year Master’s program brings together sociologists and historians from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) and other major institutions in France, including the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS). We aim to provide students with outstanding interdisciplinary training in gender and sexuality studies along with core training in the ‘major’ discipline of their specialty: sociology or history.
Both gender (as the social construction of a hierarchical, binary sexual difference) and sexuality (as the social construction, categorization and hierarchization of desire) are at the center of our program: they are studied in interrelation, as they closely shape each other. We also pay particular attention to the articulation between gender, sexuality, and other power relations with which they are intertwined, such as class and race. We contend that the study of gender and sexuality is vital to interdiscipinary research, in that it challenges and offers analytic tools to rethink the dominant paradigms of human and social sciences.
Throughout the two-year program, each student must follow compulsory, “core” courses, in order to acquire a solid theoretical and methodological background. She/he is also requested to follow a number of seminars of her/his choice, both in the Gender, Politics & Sexuality program and in other social science subjects offered at the EHESS, according to her/his major discipline and intellectual interests.
Students can either complete the two years of the Master’s program, or follow the program for a single year (Master 1 or Master 2). After completion of the Master 2 year, students graduate with an EHESS master’s degree in their major (Sociology or History), with a specialization in “Gender, Politics and Sexuality”.
